Feb. 14, Unable td save himself because his foot was caught between the cattle-guard and the rail, an unknown man was run " down by an express on the Long Island railroad yesterday and Instantly - killed. A score of workmen who tried to free the man were forced, to save hemselves, to leave him to his fate. When all efforts to release him had failed, the man became wildly excited and screamed, forgetting that he could release his foot by unlacing the shoe.' The laborers were trying to force the rail with crowbars when the whistling of the express was heard. It was desperate work, but In vain. Even the signals to stop the train were too late. The train bore down on the man, now paralysed . with fear. His body was thrown high in the air and crushed beyond recognition. ' |
