Show PRECIPITATION THIS WINTER HEAVIEST SINCE 1 896-97; SNOWFALL 6.2 INCHES DURING THE STORM OF TEN HOURS -The blinding ten-hour snowstorm which raged In Salt Lake, was the most severe storm that has visited this locality lo-cality since February 8, 189L The weather bureau calculations this morning-showed that during yesterday 6.2 inches of snow fell. ' The action of the storm was very peculiar. pe-culiar. At 6 o'clock yesterday morning Salt Lake was on the extreme western edge of a storm that passed here several sev-eral days ago and was traveling east. Although Section Director Murdoch looked for a slight snowfall he . was greatly surprised to note during the morning hours the formation of a violent vio-lent storm over this section. Most storms that visit Salt Lake come from the coast and It Is very unusual for a storm to gather in this section of the country. J Storm Now in Colorado. , . The high winds prevailing yesterday afternoon carried the storm to the southeast and it is today giving precipitation precipi-tation over southern Colorado. The 6.2 inches of snow that fell yesterday was equal to .62 of an Inch of moisture, which brings the total precipitation for the winter up to 5,41 inches, making this the wettest winter since that of 1896-97, when 8.96 inches of moisture were recorded re-corded for the four months ending with the last of February. More Snow Looked For. Mr. Murdochls of the opinion that Salt Lake will have several more good storms before the month Is ended and that the total precipitation will be greatly increased. He bases his belief on the reports for a number of years back which show that the latter part of the month of February is generally much wetter than the first half. The street car service was badly crippled crip-pled yesterday. Toward evening the car tracks In the outlying districts had become entirely covered and the street cars were effectually blocked for several sev-eral hours." The blockade coming as it did soon after 5 o'clock caused hundreds of persons per-sons to have to walk home from their places of business. In a report received by the weather bureau from Huntsville In Weber county coun-ty it is stated that 7.72 inches of moisture mois-ture fell at that point during the month of January Just passed. The same reports re-ports shows that Ogden received nearly twice as great a precipitation as Salt Lake. |
