Show WESTERN ATHLETES . TRAIN FOR ROWING SAN FRANCISCO, CaL, May .-The Stanford university athletes are taking advantage of the fine weather for a little rowing. A W. Smith, a Cornell oarsman of note, Is acting as coach. The oarsmen who are now in training do . not intend to compete against the barge crew representing the University of California Cali-fornia at Berkeley this year, but It Is in hopes of Being able to. defend Stanford's colors In an intercollegiate race to be held some time during the summer of 1904 The captain of the University of California Cali-fornia barge crew, who has been In correspondence cor-respondence with the secretary of the University of Washington Boating association, asso-ciation, feels that a rowing race between crews representing California and Washington Wash-ington will take place at Seattle some time in June. In anticipation of a hard struggle, the university crew is training dally over the Alameda course, i Alexander Pape, the champion oarsman Of the Pacific coast, is now on his journey to New York. Pape will enter for some of the big amateur racing eventa that will be held this summer on Eastern waters. |
