Putnam and Miss Sadie Brown were selected as the most graceful grace-ful skaters on the floor In the ladles' contest, con-test, which will close with a Anal test on Satnrday night of those chosen during the week. It has hsd an uninterrupted run of success for three years in the East, and this ia the first time it has been bronght to the wild and woolly West Just why only Manager Kirk LaShelle can tell. Having seen it, we now have another grudge against the great theatrical the-atrical trust for not bringing it here before. be-fore. "Checkers" breathes of the air of the gaming tables and the racetrack, but through it there runs a charming love story. It is given an elaborate atage aetting, opening open-ing in the corridor of a big hotel in Hot Spring. Ark., shifting to a small town in that State, thence to the Washington Park racetrack in Chicago and back to Arkansas. The third act. showing the great betting acene, is a piece of stage realism not often eoualled. In the name part, Hans Robert does a splendid bit of acting. No less pronounced pro-nounced a hit was tnsd by Dave Braham. Jr.. es Push Miller, the tout. He shared honors with the star aud was accorded sn ovation at the close of the third act. The other characters are well cast, especially effective ef-fective work being done by Thomas M. Hunter Hunt-er as Adontram Earlow, Isabella Parker as Cynthy and W. T. Clark aa Judge Martin. "Checkers" will run for the remainder of the week, and if the enthuaiasm of last night't crowd is any indication, the theater will be packed during the engagement. The arrival of the Avon Comedy Four completed com-pleted the bill of the Orphenra last night, and there was a large crowd present. The acrobatic ac-robatic work of the four Barda is attracting attract-ing unusual interest and the week bids fair to he a successful one. There will be the usual matineo tomorrow. w "A Son's Devotion" la drawing big crowds to the Lyric this week. It Is one of the best productions yet given by the stock company. In spesking of the Gans Nelson pictures, which are to be exhibited at the Hoxsey skating rink, one-half block west of the postof3ce. for three nights, commencing next Sunday. Manager Grant savs he had the pleasure pleas-ure of seeing ihpm in Los Angeles recently and that they are the best he has ever seen. The usual blur and flickering accompanying moving mov-ing pictures is done away with, and after one sees the foul blow delivered in the forty-second round there is no argument left as to the intent of the battler in trying to lay out the colored man. On Monday, the 26th of this month, the new Auditorium sksting rink in Richsrds street will bo opened to the public, after a delay of almost three weeks because of the damage done by the recent storm. Novel and - Interesting features. It Is stated, will mark the opening night. Of the new Auditorium Audi-torium rink, Phil O'Msrs. president, claims that it ia larger and better equipped than any other similsr place of amusement between be-tween Chicago and San Francisco. O'Mara was owner of the Skatatorium inv Mechanics' Mechan-ics' pavilion at 'Frisco before that noted structure was destroyed by the flames. From end to end the Auditorium, which is solidly constructed of brick and steel at a cost of $40,000, is 190 feet by 102 feet. The floor is fine-grained maple and is very highly polished. pol-ished. In the center of the immense interior, suspended from graceful steel girders, is a large platform, from which Held's band will furnish music. Along all sides and at one end are seats for the accommodation of onlookers. on-lookers. Clonk rooms, rest rooms and toilets for both sexes, smoking-rooms, floor managers, man-agers, instructors and "skate" boys are a few of the innovations in the new rink. A souvenir matinee at 3 p. m. for the ladies, la-dies, and the regular evening performance will terminate the engagement of "The Convict's Con-vict's Daughter." a powerful melodrama at Grand today. The play has proven to be one of the best melodramas seen locally this season. The next attraction at the Grand theater will be the sensational comedy:drama. "No- body's Claim," which will be produced here on Thursday evening for three nights and Saturday matinee. The linea are said to he original, bright, clean and spsrkling. and the piece goes with a dash and finish from first to Isst thst provokes uproanous laughter and roost hearty applause. The plot is interwoven in-terwoven with a beautiful love story full of msny serious and comical situstions. It is under the management of the same firm which had "Girl of the Streets" through here a short time ago. |
