Show STEAL 75 CENTS WORTH OP COAL And Are Fined $3 Each by City Court; the Railroad Wants to Stop the Petty Thieving Practice. Tim Georgahoples, Tom Logans and Nick Arfarakas, three Greek laborers employed by the Oregon Short Line company, were arraigned before Judge Diehl this morning pn a charge of petty larceny, it being alleged that they stole 75 cents worth of coal from the company. com-pany. With the assistance of an interpreter the three entered a plea of guilt' to the charge. From the statement of Assistant City Attorney Daly it appears that the company com-pany furnishes its section gangs with what coal they need for their camps, but that a number of the hands have contracted the habit of taking coal from the company which they carry away and sell to saloons and other placps. "It is not 60 much the value of the coal that, the eompanv objects to." said Mr. Daly, "as it is'the fact that the coal is usually taken from cars in transit tran-sit cars which have been weighed. When these cars arrive at their dentins-tkn dentins-tkn thev are weighed again and found short. The question of shortage is one that has to pass through the hands of the claim agent and other officers of the company, with the result that the company com-pany loses far more than the value of the coal." Judge Diehl imposed a fin of $3 each on the defendants, with the warning that if they came before the court again on the same charge and were found guilty they would be fined more heavily. |
