Show MAROONED PEOPLE NOT YET RESCUED PORTLAND, Or, Xov. 16. The re-' port received here' last night that the forty or more people who were marooned ma-rooned on an island. at the juncture, of the Cowlitz and the Columbia -rivers have been rescued by the steamer But ton sent from Portland to the scene for the purpose, proves untrue. . The Burton was .unable --to approach the' island on account of the powerful rush of the waters and the presence of quantities of logs and drift. -. The steamer Sarah Dixon has gone, to the scene and will endeavor to rescue the marooned people, peo-ple, who are believed to.be the families of farmers and fishermen. Owing to the fact that the Cowlitz has about reached the limit of the flood. It is. believed here that the people will be saved. ' |
