Harris . and Received With Great h Applause. i Mayor Richard P. Morris was renominated by acclamation for office which he now holds, by the Democratic city convention, 'fhis afternoon. John 8. Critchlow, present City Recorder, also was (renominated by acclamation. Robert AW Sloan presided as both i : temporary and permanent chairman of the'convention. Mr. Sloan praised Mayor Morris' administration and expressed regret that defections de-fections from the ranks of the Democracy were taking place. The Democratic city convention met at the . Grand theater this morning to nominate candidates for the various city offices for the coming election. ' - iThe convention was called to order ,lt 10:40 o'clock by City and County Chairman Mathonlhah Thomas. The parquette was about one-third filled by a part of 620 delegates from the various precincts. Held's band was In attendance and enlivened the theater with stirring airs as the delegates filed slowly to their respective places.- .-. ;..,. . Priest was chosen chairman of the c6mmlttee and the committee prepared its report as follows: , "The temporary organisation Is made permanent, with the following additions: addi-tions: Josh Selley. assistant secretary; Mrs. J. Fewson Smith and Mrs. E. J. D. Roundy. vice-chairmen, and H. Klenke, sergeant-at-arms." The order of business was determined upon as follows: ' Ratification of members of the Democratic Dem-ocratic city central committee as named by the precincts in the primaries. Nominations in the following order: Mayor, Recorder, Treasurer, Auditor and . Attorney, emd" selection . ot party emblem for . the. campaign. BANNERS SUSPENDED FROM WALLS OF THEATER DURING INTERMISSION : ' ' During the interim between the morning' and the afternoon sessions several banners bearing party inscriptions, inscrip-tions, mottoes and emblems were suspended sus-pended upon the walls of the theater. Ke banners, were inscribed as follows: fol-lows: "We Love Our City. Stand Up for It" "Democrats. Are Proud of This Administration." Ad-ministration." "Democrats Have Insured Ample Water Supply for Salt Lake." Held's band, by Its stirring music attracted at-tracted a large crowd to the theater before the session was called to order, and when the musicians entered the theater they were followed by a larger crowd than was present at the morning morn-ing session. Convention Reconvenes. At 1:25 o'clock Permanent Chairman R. W. Sloan called the convention to order. The report of the committee on credentials cre-dentials was called for, and read by Ben D. Luce, secretary. The report was adopted without opposition. op-position. The report of the committee on permanent per-manent organisation and order -of business bus-iness was read by Joel L. Priest; chairman chair-man of the committee. ; A motion to appoint a chaplain was laughed down, as such was- provided for by making the temporary organization organi-zation permanent. "Please keep the -aisles cleared," shouted the chairman. "This is no circus Its a business meeting." The aisles were quickly cleared amid laughter. . Not Ready to Report. bearing" the Inscription: "City Improvements : Under Morris4 Administration. Sewer' Extension, 10?4 miles. Sidewalks, 87 miles. Water-mains, Water-mains, 8 miles. Mathonlhah Thomas called the convention con-vention to order in a few words and thanked the delegates for their attendance. at-tendance. . "The cries of newfangled reformers, re-formers, their whimpering regarding their patriotism to the flag, nauseate one almost to the point of vomit. "True patriots are too busy with their patriotism and their work for the -flag to shout themselves hoarse lauding laud-ing their own patriotism. . "Your duty is not so much to elect - a ticket but to make the ticket worthy of election." , Goes After Republicans. v The speaker then "went after" the leaders of the Republican party in the State, and urged Republicans to support sup-port the square Democratic platform and the square Democrats who would be placed on that ticket. Temporary Chaplain Mllando Pratt then offered prayer, after which the call was read by Ben Luce, temporary secretary. . Chaplain Mllando Pratt offered an invocation and the time of waiting was well spent' by the friends of various var-ious candidates, in "hustling" for their favorites. Report Is Amended. It was moved and seconded that an amendment be placed on the report of the committee on' order of business, that delegations del-egations report and vote by districts Instead In-stead of by precincts. This amendment was adopted without a dissenting vote.. . The : order of . business was again changed and "the rooster ln'the same old attitude" was selected as .the party emblem. em-blem. Morris bj Acclamation. 'All' preliminaries having been disposed of, nominations were declared in order and in a complimentary address Fisher 8. Harris presented the name of Richard P. Morris. It was promptly rnOved and seconded sec-onded that Mr. Morris be named by acclamation, ac-clamation, and It was done with a whoop. Mayor Morns was conducted to the stage amid a roar of cheers, and made a brief speech of thanks for .the honor conferred con-ferred upon him by the convention. Just Like Mayor Morris. ' . John S. Critchlow, present City Recorder, Record-er, was placed in nomination by Frank B. Stephens and his selection, like that of Mayor Morris, was by acclamation. For the Treasurershlp Joseph E. Calne was named by Matt Thomas and the claims of Stephen H. Lynch were presented present-ed by C. Olsen. Mr.' Calne was -nominated , on the first ballot by a vote of 253V4 to Mr. Lynch's 243V. i ' ' |
