Show FARMERS APPEAR AGAINST SMELTERS The County Commissioners and the County Board of Health met at the city end county bi'ildmg Wednesday morning to hear testimony from the farmers and the smeltermen as to whether the smelters smel-ters are a nuisance. Bishop O. P. Miller acted as spokesman for the farmers and In a brief but forcible forci-ble speech reviewed the history of the case and the damages which have been sustained sine- the last meeting between the two contesting parties. He exhibited the Jaw bone of a sheep which showed the copper incrusted on it and stated that they had expected to exhibit a horse and rhow'the effect that the gases had on the animal, but unfortunately when the horse reached the south city limits and saw the condition of State street he lay down and died. Bishop Miller closed with an appeal to the Commissioners to take such steps as were necessary to abate the nuisance and protect the health and property of the farmers living within the territory affected affect-ed by the smoke. W. M. Bradley, attorney for the smelters, smel-ters, followed Bishop Miller and assured as-sured the Commissioners of the desire on the part of the smelter managers to remedy rem-edy the matter as won as possible, but stated that, inasmuch as the smelter people peo-ple had not understood that testimony was to be Introduced, they were not prepared pre-pared to go on with the case and therefore there-fore asked for a postponement. Chairman Mickay overruled the motion and the meeting adjourned until 1:30 o'clock in the afternoon. |
