Show "UNEMPLOYED FATHER" WRITES ON RACE SUICIDE pathiflng railroad corporations, who promised us, when begging us to grant them a franchise tor the Improvement they wers going to make, that they would find -employment for so many meh, and the benefit would be to Salt Lake City. If any berson would take a walk out to North Salt Lake, he would find these men employed there, but Instead of being taxpayers and fathers of Our Bait Lake rising generation, genera-tion, they will' And Italians, Greeks. Japanese, etc., these are living In box cars, packed like sardines In a can. I for one would like to know what benefit we, as fathers and taxpayers, or Bait Lake City, as a city, receive fromthls class of people, I think the only benefit derived therefrom is by these railroad corporations. I for one would like to know who is responsible for thla vast army of alien that haa Invaded this country, notwithstanding our "very strict," alien Immigration laws. I believe these questions are very 1 much more In heed of a solution, than that of face Suicide, and I would like to hear from some abler pen -a few opinions opin-ions on the above subject. The second item Is In regard to our esteemed lawmakers, who are at the present time holding sessions In our midst and congratulating themselves on not having a great deal of work. But they can make the work hold out for the allotted time, so I believe It would be a very good suggestion to them to have them spend a little time on this unemployed question and see If they could not bring about some better solution solu-tion of the child labor problem than race suicide. Hoping you will find space In your valuable columns and thanking you in anticipation of the same, I remain, yours truly. UNEMPLOYED FATHER AND TAX-PAYER. TAX-PAYER. P. S. Perhaps It would be a good time for the polltax collector to visit these foreigners In 8alt Lake City and gather in their poll tax. I know we Americans won't be overlooked when the time comes. Editor Evening Telegram: A few days ago my attention was drawn to a paragraph in the dally papers, concerning concern-ing the Woman's society of New York, and desiring some light On this matter and "existing Causes of the Same," I wrote the following letter to the Deseret Evening News, but I am sorry to say that paper has failed to publish it. As I believe it to be a question of great Importance Im-portance to the working-men of this city, I ask the favor or a publication of the same In your columns, as I believe your generosity to the welfare of the people of this city and State has always been for their benefit. I hope you may continue to use your coiumM to help and educate the worklngmen. The following is the letter as sent to the News: My attention is called to items In your valuable paper, Deseret News, that I think will be of much Interest te the unemployed husbands and fathers of Salt Lake City at the present time. The first Item is found on the front page, under the heading, "Woman' Society So-ciety Favors Race Suicide." and goes on to speak of the Injustice done to children In large families, where parents pa-rents are unable to support them. The society in question desires anti-pauper ism laws that, shall restrict the propagation propa-gation of the human species, as the society so-ciety believes this would furnish the solution of the chill labor problem, etc., and concludes by saying: "We are wasting sympathy on people who surround themselves with large numbers of little ones, when they cannot can-not possibly feed them. Let the parents starve, if they bring paupers Into the world." Hence the above society is In favor of race suicide. Now I thlnkthere are many unemployed unem-ployed fathers in Salt Lake City who will think the best way and means of solving the unemployed problem and also a solution of the child labor ques- tion, would be to furnish employment for these unemployed fathers. "Oh, well," you may say, "this Is the wrong time of year, as we have nothing for them to do until spring." So to keep ourselves our-selves and our little ones from starving until spring comes we must live on the opportunities expected. Then when these opportunities do come, the first thing we must think of is our taxes. Oh, yes, they must be paid, work or no work, because, no taxes paid, no home. See? Now, Mr. Editor, I wish to call your attention to the great number of men, most of whom are fathers and taxpay ers, who are at present walking the streets of Salt Lake City and unable to find employment and earn food for the loved ones who may be huddled together to-gether around some small stove, wondering won-dering If papa has succeeded in earning anything to reed their hungry mouths, not daring to think of the luxuries of clothing to clothe them. Again, Mr. Editor, I would like to call your attention to another number of men, some 400 or 500, who are not taxpayers. tax-payers. I doubt if they are fathers with little ones depending on them for support. sup-port. These men you will find steadily employed by the public-loving and sym- |
