Peltier, began to. put 'In his defense. His defense is that the people here "axe dead easy" and gave him money In exchange for his company. At yesterday's session those' alleged to have been "stung" by : Mr.' Peltier's charminr personality took the witness chair against ; .him.; These included Chief' of the Fire Department Bywater, A. Fred Wey, proprietor 'oTjthe;w:il8on hotel, I". A. Doles," a saloon man, and United States , Senator .Reed Smoot.. ".. By water said Peltier told him he was a postofflce Inspector. He loaned him j:5 because his last month's salary check had failed to show up." Bywater also introduced. him to Senator. Smoot. Bywater. testified Peltier .promised to get htm jrallroad passes for a trip east. Hotelkeeper Wey said Peltier's bill for lodgings at his house was still "alive," although he looked upon the account as a "dead" one. - He said Peltier Pel-tier 'obtained credit from, him un his representation that he was working for Uncle Samuel.. .-, L. A. Doles came across with 120 to Peltier because Peltier "looked good to him" and because he claimed, to be a great friend of L. 8. Dickinson, his partner. Postmaster - James , Clove of Provo testified he had a "lemonade" with Peltier, Pel-tier, but no financial dealings. The lemonade had no stick in it. Senator Smoot testified- that Peltier told him he was a - "secret service agent." v Senator Smoot entertained Peltier at his home , for two days. He also gave him" a suit of clothes and money.. The evidence was stricken out, aa it appeared that the gifts were voluntary- gifts from Mr. Bmoot and not obtained under false misrepresentation. According tb the testimony, when Peltier was asked if he knew Inspectors Sharp and Nichols, he said: "I should say not; they look like 30 cents to roe." - - - - ... i Peltier is hopeful of acquittal and was very cheery during the session.
