He gave his name as Mike Broad and appeared X4 the recruiting re-cruiting officer like some of the young men who occasionally enlisted to bury their troubles. Two hours after taking the oath he disappeared and did not return until Sunday. . He was then sent to Castle Williams, , Governor's island, Under 'charge of desertion. In some manner Broad had smuggled Into- his cell a small vial of carbolic acid and when the sentinel tried to arouse him front what appeared a sound sleep, the prisoner pris-oner was found- to be a suicide.
