V kissed each other The Jewish Jewish Jewish Jew Jew- ish people lived Jived in a land S trampled and pillaged by the S armies of Egypt and Assyria 5 Hence they knew out of S tragic suffering the futility 1 of war and the need for another another an an- S. S S other approach to peace r They knew that woe would S come to those who exploited t. t the poor S Said Amos Hear this 1 l word ye that oppress the poor that crush the needy needy let let justice roll down as waters a and d righteousness as an overflowing stream Hate the evil and love the good and establish justice in the gate So also Isaiah pointed to a time when men by following moral principle principle principle prin prin- ciple could use the mC metal 11 of weapons for constructive purposes purposes pur pur- poses beating their swords s into plowshares and their spears S. S into pruning hooks even as after World War I battleships were cut up and transformed into tractors Those prophets knew that hat human welfare is an essential foundation for peace and order among human beings The command of the Old Testament then was justice and truth Heart of Man lUan Must lust Be Right In the New Testament the man Jesus a Jew and heir of the prophets added the insight that the heart of men must be right An inward change is necessary An attitude of love loveall loveall loveall all men men even unto the least of them should motivate every deed He showed a way of forgiveness and reconciliation needed today among the family of nations and workable there no less than among the individual natural families that are the training ground of human living But today His way is largely ignored For lack of that understanding the nations consume one another The other fixed point is present necessity among nations There is no prospect of peace in the direction in which we move The immediate necessity of the world for fulfillment of the hope of peace by peaceful means is only realizable through strengthening the United Nations There is no other real hope of peace Shortly before World arId War II began there was blazoned In foot eight-foot letters across a warehouse in England these theseS S words Cooperate or Die Present necessity points to that The organization begun in San Francisco must be developed into a real structure for federal democratic world government The hope for One World of Wendell Willkie and of righteous men before and after him is the really practical one not the use of mens men's hunger as a pawn in a diplomatic jockeying for power in a process that builds resentment suspicion counter- counter aggression and costly armaments 5 Blame Rests on Both Sides Russia is guilty but so are we Blame rests on both Bid sides s and many a seeker of peace cries today to statesmen of each center of power A leA plague on both your houses In the words of the great hymn by Clifford Bax such persons say 4 Turn Tur back 0 man forswear thy foolish ways Would man but wake from out his haunted sleep earth might be fai fair and all men glad and wise Lines projected from ancient insight intersect with the implications of modern necessity Both point to world cooperation cooperation cooperation cooper cooper- on the basis of good will and honesty among all men Let the help of America continue to go o forth to the world not as an instrument of power politics but instead as a mission of love and mercy reaching the poor which needs the help Let Letus Letus Letus us each try to practice the ways of love and justice in all ourS our S goings and nd comings that we shall be each one a sound portion portion por par tion of the foundation for peace that exists wherever is found an honest man with goodwill in his heart l S Respect for human life and development of reasonableness in individuals and in collective affairs of men need to become the prevailing motive if we are to return to the main pathway of progress To a great extent we need to catch up to the q prophets of Israel including Jesus that we may follow after the things which make for peace |
