Show Shall We Have Utah Symphony or Not The Utah Symphony orchestra is making a strong plea to the legislature for funds with which to subsidize its program of making fine music available for the people of Utah It is a plea which will win a great deal of sympathy up and down the state because so many thousands thousands thou thousands sands of have enjoyed the symphony's symphony's symphony's sym sym- phony's performances More than annually p attend concerts in all parts of Utah and many thousands more in and out of this state have enjoyed the Utah Symphony's performances over the radio Our Utah Symphony is now well established from a musical standpoint It Itis ItIs Itis is recognized as one of the better musical organizations in the nation But it is not soundly established from a financial standpoint No symphony orchestra anywhere in America merica is self All AU are arc subsidized subsidized sub sub- either by private subscription I endowment or governmental tion In Utah we have tried to subsidize the symphony by private subscription subscription- I but frankly it Is just too big a task in i our state There is not enough private I wealth in Utah to subsidize the orchestra I to the necessary amount of approximate approximate- i ly Iy a year The Utah symphony board has now gone before the legislature asking for a subsidy from the state of a year They say that plus annual earnings of around a year and other private and public support will insure a successful success success- ful symphony program on a permanent basis It is not an easy question for the legislature and the governor to decide The need for economy in state operations Is manifest Yet on the other hand there are distinct advantages in the Utah Sym phony It Is of educational cultural publicity and economic benefit to the state C Considering its I many advantages and the wholesome entertainment it pro pro- vides videa for so many Utah men women and i children it Is a pretty good buy at 50 50 i a year The real point is that any symphony I must be subsidized In Utah experience I has proven tOVen beyond question that the I major subsidization must come from the state The question Is not whether the tho legislature should help out the symphony by making an ap appropriation The question question ques ques- tion is whether Utah shall have havo a symphony sym sym- I phony or not We Wo simply will not have a I Utah Symphony after this season unless the state government assumes the re reSponsibility re- re I of underwriting the project I |
