Show KINO. BWASCl -iTballr Deprived or Ills Hitherto Despotic Power. New York, Sept. 12. Sun'i special, London: Leltcrs from missionaries mis-sionaries In Uganda say that King Mwanga has been almost wholly stripped of the despotic power which he aud bis fathers for some centuries cent-uries have exercised. Ue is now of little Importance In his own country. count-ry. White Influence are in comi-Ictc comi-Ictc ascendancy. TheKIngcanget nothing that he does not ask for from his chief, who are under control of tbe Protestant or Catholic religion. This Is a great change fjr the young King, who a while ago killed a Bishop, Imprisoned white missionaries, and slaughtered native Christians by the score. No heathen are allowed to bold any office In the new government. Many of them are permitted to remain re-main in the laud, but thtre is not n chief among them. Tbe great offices, of which there are about six very important oucs, have been equally divided between the two Christian parties. There has been great danger of serious clashing between the Protestant and Catholic sects, but by the advice of tbe wisest of those Catholic and Protestant missionaries mission-aries they have decided to bury their differenees and work together for the good of the country. There Is still considerable bad feeling and Jealousy, but there seems to le no prospect now- of the open rupture that recently threatened. Tlie parties par-ties have taken an oath, signed by their leaders, agreeing that whatever what-ever their dl-ptites may be they will not spill oue nnothei's blood, but will depend upon sober arguments and arbitration to settle all their quarrels. The Mohammedan party seems to be entirely defeated. |
