Show Springville Musi Go Over The Top "In checking over the number of nersons stricken with the dread polio disease, it was found that 29 children and adults in Springville have received treatment, surgery and hospitalization furnished by the National Foundation of Infantile Infan-tile Paralysis," said Del Humphrey, Humph-rey, local chairman for the March of Dimes drive. "One of the more serious cases," he continued, "is Miss Carolee Childs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Childs, who was stricken in 1943. After six weeks of the Sister Kenny treatment at her home, she was sent to Salt Lake General Hospital by the Foundation Founda-tion where she remained for six months, undergoing therapy and muscle stretching treatments. She was then sent to Warm Springs, Ga., where braces were applied to her legs, and was taught to get around by the use of crutches. Daily exercising in the Warm Springs pool helped relieve her tortured muscles. "After four and one-half weeks there, Carolee returnd home, reentering re-entering school in August, 1944, receiving physio-therapy treatments treat-ments at the Provo clinic each two weeks. In August 1945 she was placed in the polio division at the General Hospital in Salt Lake City until October, returning home to attend school again. May, of 1946, saw her in St. Marks hospital hos-pital for surgery, when part of her hip bone was removed and muscles in both hips undergoing surgery to stretch the muscles.." "This one case," continued Mr. Humphrey, "emphasizes the tremendous tre-mendous responsibility of our citizens cit-izens in fighting this dread disease. The average family could never hope to pay. Few families can meet the cost of extended polio treatments. Last year there were 160 cases of polio in Utah county alone. Already this year there are 13 cases in Utah county. "Lets take care of our own! Get behind the March of Dimes!" |
