Show 5men. That's terrific pitching any way you look at it. And just to prove it wasn't a flash in the pan, a few nights later he faced Bob Feller, now his team mate, and another all-star team. This time he pitched the full nine inning's in-ning's and struck out 16 batters including such sluggers as Ralph Kiner and Ken Keltner. Ol Satch, of course, isn't expected to .be quite as effective every time he goes in to pitch. But he . . nine-inning game against New York. Feller's refusal left Harris sizzling under the collar. As long as he. has anything to do with the All-Star game, he'll never give the Cleveland fire-baller another an-other chance to play. Manager Steve O'Neill's faith in Dick Wakefield is 'beginning to pay off. A few years ago, the Detroit leftfielder proved to be a terrific find and loomed as one of the best players in the league. In hitting, he was right up there with Williams, DiMaggio and others. After serving 1945 in the tt s Navv. he reioined the Tig- Sports 1 COMMENTS By Guy Stevens The pennant race in both major leagues is still far from settled but many already are picking the Cleveland Indians and the Boston Braves to meet in the World Series. Maybe it's just hopeful wishing but it could very easily happen. However, from here in, the Indians and the Braves can expect plenty of competition with I ved that when he signed Leroy j (Satchel) Paige of the Kansas City Monarchs. All Veeck has to do is announce that Ol' Satch is going to pitch and the ball park should be packed. Many seem to think that the Negro speed artist is not the pitcher pit-cher of a few years back. Satchel l admits he has slipped a little that's why he is dropping down to the majors. In spite of his age, j which is reported to be anywhere from 39 to 53, he's still pretty tricky with that ball. He throws overhand, underhand, side arm jand, as far as control is concerned, concer-ned, he once pitched forty consee-! consee-! utive strikes. So he should do ail right if he shows anything like his old form. Satchel is not a stranger among big league players. He has pitched to many of them in exhibtoin i games. Last year, in Los Angeles, he faced Ewell Blackwell and an ! all-star aggregation. He pitched four innings and struck out nine a should give a gooa acuuuia himself and . probably save many a game for Boss Bill Veeck. Incidentally, Satchel was so nicknamed because of his extra large "puppies" It's very evident that Ted Williams Wil-liams slugging star of the Boston Bos-ton Red Sox, has been concentrating concentra-ting on hits instead of homeruns this season. In fact, he has hit to left almost as often as to right which is making the famous Williams shift obsolete these days. If he had been trying for the fence, his batting average may not have been up there but it's certain he would toe leading both leagues in the homerun department. depart-ment. . How come Bob Feller refused to pitch for Bucky Harris in the All-Star game? That's the second time he has walked out. Last year he claimed he couldn't pitch because of a sore back, yet sever-1 sever-1 days later he pitched a full apple He's in the clean-up posi tion, batting around the .300 m and his average is Mi steadily. Wakefield may i m lS had hoped he would be when Z first signed him back in To while still at Michigan U. ers. And for some reason or other his hitting and fielding took a big drop. So much so that last year they were just about ready to sell or trade him off. But Skipper O'Neill decided to give h i m another chance. Today, Wakefield is again hitting the old the league standings changing quite often. As far as Cleveland and Boston fans are concerned they're behind Lou Boudreau and Billy South-worth South-worth 100 per cent. Both teams were only given an outside chance to cop the pennant so their show- ' mg to date has been a big surprise. sur-prise. Can they keep it up is the big puzzler right now. The Indians won their last pennant pen-nant back in 1920 and then went on to win the World Series defeating' de-feating' Brooklyn 5 games to 2 The Braves copped their last pennant pen-nant in 1914 and then won four straight from Philadelphia in the October classic. So, "considering the time element alone, they're just about due. - It begins to look as though .this will be the Browns' last year in St. Louis. President Dick Mucker-man Mucker-man recently .remarked that unless un-less his team received .better support sup-port he would move the franchise to some other city. The Browns are not drawing, in fact, they're not even drawing as well as last season when only 332,000 customers-turned out. If Boss Mucker-man Mucker-man is wondering why fans are staying away, he himself is to blame. He sold every name play-on play-on the team with the exception of i Bob Dillinger. He fired his .manager. So you couldn't expect fans to support a team that was being .ripped apart. Muckerman will have to build his team and he'll have to build confidence with it. And that is going to take a few years at least. Evidently, that's too long to wait. Marcel Cerdan regained his European middleweight title by defeating Cyrille Delannoit, the Belgium scrapper, the other night. But he had much difficulty in doing it. The crowd in fact booed the decision. Delannoit, an unheralded un-heralded fighter, took the title away from Cerdan several months ago. Everyone figured then that the French battler had an off day. Naturally in a return match, Cerdan would be at his best so they -can't say he was off form again Either Delannoit is a very good scrapper or else Cerdan has lost much of his old zip.
