The pending pend-ing legislation contains the provision pro-vision that any eligible person who may join the National Guard prior to the bill's passage would be exempted ex-empted from the draft. The units will receive their pay Saturday morning and begin the march home early Sunday. The camp's payroll will be well over the $100,000 mark, General West ment, Camp Williams, "in an alH out effort to establish an efficient fighting unit. Appropriately called "Utah's Minute Men," the national guard organizations intend to equal or surpass the high tradition and competency which the state's guard units always have established establish-ed in the past. Known throughout through-out the nation as one of the finest national guard states, men and officers of-ficers have now reached the climax cli-max of the camp's training activities activi-ties and this week will conduct extensive ex-tensive field training including bridge building and use of heavy equipment in road and air-strip construction. Captain William M. Alleman, C. E., and 1st Lieut. Russell J. Laney, both of Springville, feel the men have devoted much time in their efforts to make the camp experience experi-ence a happy and beneficial one. : f Captain Alleman, commanding of- ficer of the unit, said he was very heartened by the adjustment and progress his troops had made in so short a time. The camp's recreation program now is in full swing. The swimming swim-ming pool is filled to capacity with troops as well as water. A softball tournament, swimming tournament, horseshoes and hole-in-one golf tournament are being conducted by the guard's recreation recrea-tion officer, Major Harold G. Miller, Mil-ler, T. C. The recreation program also includes nightly movies or live entertainment in the giant recreation hall. The adjutant general of the Utah National Guard, Brigadier General J. Wallace West, commenting com-menting on the pending draft legislation leg-islation now before the congress, urged the young men of the state |
