If boys and girls are kept at home engaged in light work or some kind of supervised play or encouraged to participate in recreation rec-reation at the city park provided each day, there would be less vandalism, van-dalism, in the opinion of city of- ficials and policemen. Chief H. M. Weight called attention at-tention to vandalism acts during the past week when 27 windows were broken at Memorial hall. It was the work of juveniles bent upon malicious mischief with nothing noth-ing else to occupy their time, he stated. Also several windows have been broken from a local garage and numerous other similar acts are reported almost daily, the police officer said. It is becoming a serious problem prob-lem with scores of children roaming roam-ing the streets with nothing to occupy their time. Parents in many instances do not know where their children are from morning until night and they are left with time on their hands to conjure up some type of entertainment and too often it is destructive, it has been pointed out. During the past few days also, police officers have picked up several sev-eral younger boys for shop-lifting and others are being rounded up for other acts which in the opinion of officers is the result of having nothing to do. The cooperation of parents is earnestly solicited in solving the problem of finding something to occupy the minds of these young people. The city has provided superyised play at the City park daily from 2 until 5 p. m., and more than a hundred boys and girls are taking advantage of this entertainment. Parents are asked to send the children there each afternoon. For the younger boys, ball games, tennis ten-nis and other forms of recreation are being worked out. Young boys especially who 'would like to participate par-ticipate in some type of recreation are asked to contact George Pehrson Pehr-son and he will provide something for them. Such activity will take up some of the leisure time and at the same time will help to do away with the vandalism now going go-ing on in the city. |
