Show OFFICIAL MAKES COMMENT ON BEET CROP LABOR L. G. Sumsion, president of Central Cen-tral Utah Beet Growers Association, Associa-tion, said: "As beet growers of Utah approach ap-proach the planting season, I think there are several things which they should keep in mind. In the first place, I believe the labor situation situ-ation is definitely brighter than it was a year ago. People are more aware of our need for food than ever before, so. they will see that a greater percentage of our school boys and our white collar workers from cities and towns will enlist for agricultural labors during dur-ing emergency periods this year. If every boy in Utah county between be-tween the ages of 16 and 17, not otherwise employed, would enlist to do farm work, we could handle our entire farm program without any difficulty. "Not only is the growing of sugar sug-ar beets important because of the present need for sugar, but we who live in a sugar beet district must protect our privilege to grow beets at some future time after government govern-ment acreage allotments have again been put into force. "The sugar beet industry of Utah county is a permanent benefit bene-fit to this district and should be maintained by all means. Its value val-ue to the nation now that we need more sugar is apparent, but its value to the farmers and business people, and workers, and taxpayers taxpay-ers of this district will become even more apparent after the war when activity in industrial lines falls off." |
