CONGRESS BACKS UP GENERALS A lot of nonsense has been spoken and written about the disciplinary dis-ciplinary action recently taken by Lieut. Gen. Ben Lear, who rightly punished 350 soldiers near Memphis, Mem-phis, Tennessee, for their conduct in shouting at girls in shorts on a golf course. The way some congressmen talked, you would expect congress to pass an act immediately upholding uphold-ing the right of the soldiers to shout, as they please, at all women they meet. This would Invite Improper Im-proper conduct everywhere and give the go-ahead signal to small groups of men in uniform, which would inevitably produce civilian displeasure and cause serious criticism cri-ticism of men in uniform.
