Show Should Conn k.o. Pastor, which is possible, this could practically assure him a second crack at the champion. Should Pastor k.o. Conn (which is less probable) he too might get another shot at the title. And either Pastor or Conn might be able to step away from Nova (should he be champion) easier than they could step away from Louis. Any of the three may be heavyweight king next year at this 'time, with Conn and Nova having the edge. Of course, that guy named nam-ed Joe may still be hanging around. We'll just have to wait and see which way the wind- blows. COMMENT-ON COMMENT-ON SPORTS I By Ed Sims ' BOXING . . . COMES AUTUMN AND THE BOXING WORLD AWAKENS News in the boxing world is rather ra-ther scarce these days but come the autumn winds and things will pick up. There's Lou Nova all toughened up at his summer camp and waiting for Louis in September. Sep-tember. There's Billy Conn all dolled doll-ed up in Hollywood, just waiting. And there's Bob Pastor, who out at Los Angeles recently gave a guy named Turkey Thompson such a pasting that Uncle Mike Jacobs is thinking seriously of giving Pastor Pas-tor another chance. This chance doesn't refer to another an-other crack at Louis, however at least, not directly. Should Bob belt all the opposition there is, he may that bout for some later date, ever heightened). So we'll leave . NOVA HAS GOOD CHANCE AGAINST LOUIS Now let's look into Nova's chances of taking the champion in September. Lou is big (which may or may not prove to be a handicap), handi-cap), tough, and packs more of a wallop than Conn or Pastor. And he's really taking this chance seriously, ser-iously, which counts strongly in his favor. When we take into consideration con-sideration that Louis really may be slipping that also counts m the Californian's favor. Lastly, when we consider that Nova's only bad showing was when he was somewhat ill, that the remainder of his record reads nicely for that of any heavyweightthis heavy-weightthis seems to clinch the case. Then we think Nova will win? We never clinch a case against Joe Louis until he's counted count-ed out. And Louis is far from being be-ing counted out right now. We simply sim-ply mean that Nova has a whale of a chance not odds. Louis has the odds, of course, but this corner thinks it'll be closer than the dope-sters dope-sters figure it. Nova will supply the champion a night's entertainment his second sec-ond in a row. The one factor which keeps many a Conn believer away from Nova's corner is the fact that all the big boys whom Louis can more easily hit say good-night comparatively early. The light, fast-stepping lads (Conn, Pastor, etc.) seem to show up better against the champion. get his third crack at the guy r maybe. But he'll take on a few opponents op-ponents with that same idea in mind first. And his initial opposition, opposi-tion, if Jacobs can arrange it that way, will be one William Conn. Billy is the cocky Irishman who tossed his championship out of the window during stanza No. 13 last June. Louis even admitted Conn probably whipped himself. This drama more than likely will be staged in November if it is staged. The winner would probably be given another shot at the title which may, by that time, be held by young Lou Nova. But we only said may. Loser also may meet loser but interest over that one won't be heightened for many, many moons yet to come (if it's CONN PICKED TO WHIP PASTOR As to the winner of the proposed pro-posed Pastor-Conn bout, this corner cor-ner would give the edge to Conn. But this bout, if arranged, should certainly be well worth seeing. It is possible that the boxing fan will see more actual boxing than he has seen in a long time. As to each of the boys' sidestepping, side-stepping, it would be a hard choice to make. But Conn probably takes a little more power around the ring in his fists. Therefore, he probably will wear down the Cali-fornian Cali-fornian first. But since Louis couldn't wear the boys down for quite some time it may be a hot battle all the way. |
