Show '"Man From Down Under" Stars Charles Laughton Charles Laughton brings anoth-of anoth-of his beloved characterizations to the screen in the first recent film to deal with modern Australia, M-G-M's "The Man From Down Under," playing at the Rivoli theater Friday and Saturday. Laughton portrays an Aussie Aus-sie who leaves Belgium at the end of the last war, taking back with him to Australia two refugee children chil-dren whom he believes to be sister sis-ter and brother. In his hurry to leave he completely forgets Aggie Dawlins. Aggie, played by lovely, Binnie Barnes, an English entertainer, enter-tainer, is left quite literally waiting wait-ing at the church. Years pass and the children mature. Donna Reed is now a lovely young girl and Richard Carlson Australia's champion cham-pion boxer. But hard times hit Laughton. When Aggie reappears as a rich widow, he Rambles nisi to her. With the outbreak of the inn and loses everything he owns war, Laughton enlists in the land army until the threat of Jap invasion in-vasion brings him home again to a commission in the army and into Aggie's arms. This is Miss Barnes' first screen appearance in over a year, and Donna Reed and Richard Rich-ard Carlson advance another notch in these characterizations. |
