Show ereen Shorts One of the largest casts of soldiers and civilians to be seen in a musical-comedy motion picture since the days when D. W. Griffith Grif-fith employed great numbers of men and women in his motion-picture motion-picture spectacles of early days will be in Irving Berlin's "This Is The Army." It will include the original cast of "This Is The Army" Ar-my" of 350 members of the U. S. provisional task force, some 500 othcr soldiers based at Camp. Cooke, California, another 500 from the 174th Infantry and hosts of civilian extras. In all, more than 3,000 people will be seen in the finished motion picture. Hollywood, along with all the rest of the country, is feeling the pinch of the war. Not only is the shortage of leading men bothering both-ering all major studios, but such shortages as those of raw film, wire, pipe, nails, paint, silk stockings stock-ings and gasoline are really getting get-ting to be problems. However, as in the case of the average housewife house-wife who must get along without numbers of things to which she has been accustomed, Hollywood is learning to economize (imagine that) and finds that life isn't too, too bad. With the airplane so much in the news and airplane pictures so popular, one of the most-prized items in one studio's prop department depart-ment today is a twisted heap of steel, iron and tin the scarred remains of a wrecked airplane, obtained ob-tained before Pearl Harbor. The crumpled engine and torn fuselage are in such constant demand for air crash scenes that rentals on it have mare its owner a heap of dough. Ingrid Bergman, fast becoming becom-ing one of the most-wanted actresses act-resses in town, has been loaned by David O. Selznick to MGM for the feminine lead in its version of Patrick Hamilton's English melodrama, melo-drama, "Gaslight." The play is now on Broadway as "Angel Street." Speaking of Broadway reminds re-minds us that Joan Caulfield of the cast of the play, "Kiss And Tell," has signed a contract with Paramount with a reported salary, of $1,000 a week. In order to devote more time to Army camp entertainment, Eleanor Powell has received, at her request, a release from her contract with MGM. Ann Corio is one actress who doesn't intend to be left stranded when age overtakes her. She has a $100,000 trust fund all paid which starts paying off when she's forty at the rate of $100 a week. It's too bad there aren't more girls with her good sense. All of the players appearing in "The Song of Bernadette" play their roles sans make-up. The cast, headed by Jennifer Jones, present a startling non-cosmetic facial effect. We were interested in learning learn-ing how and why David Selznick added Shirley Temple to his list of talented players. He declares that, while watching various actresses act-resses walk to meet Madame Chiang Chi-ang Kai-shek, he was particularly impressed with only two, Ingrid Bergman and Shirley Temple, as the "two most wonderful personalities." perso-nalities." He declared, "I think Shirley is enchanting." That's some praise, coming from Selznick Selz-nick who is known as a real "picker." - |
