Show Devils Seek Third Victory In Game With Miners Fri. Coach Alma Garrett and his league-leading Red Devils will travel to Eureka Friday night in hopes for continued success in their Nebo pennant race after having wrapped up two wins in two starts. The Sophs, unlucky in their first two games, will attempt at-tempt to break into the win column col-umn ' against the Miners in the preliminary batle at 6:30 p.m. Oevils Burn Dons ... Springville high school's "Garret "Gar-ret tized" Red Devils raked the favored Spanish Fork Dons over the coals to the delight of the partisan Red Devil crowd last Friday Fri-day night as they forked out a tingling 45-47 victory and maintained main-tained a spotless record in league plav. Sparked by the brilliant performances per-formances by Jerry Thorn, Duke Reed, Brent Haymond, Gary Gab-bitas, Gab-bitas, and Pete Carter, the Springville Spring-ville machine was not to be out- during the entire game although in spots, brighter moments seemed long in making an appearance. Coach Alma Garrett had his team keyed to the right piteh for the invasion of the favored Dons and when his club came out with a two-point opening lead as the game opened, Spanish Fork had to muster their best talents together to-gether early in the game. The Dons did just that and ran up a 5-2 lead. Thorn and Carter tallied from the foul line and Spanish dunked in another basket to lead 8-4. Brent Haymond came to the rescue with two buckets to put the game on even terms but only for a moment as Swenson swished in one of his several side shots to put the Dons ahead. Gary Gabitas, Duke Reid and Jeiry Thorn then tanked in consecutive baskets to - end the quarter with a 15-11 lead. Holmes came in during the second sec-ond quarter for Reid to continue the exciting game and maneuvered maneuver-ed a beautiful dribble-in and lay-up lay-up shot to keep the Red Devils scoring attack soaring. Thorn, and Haymond contributed fielders to give the Devils a 29-24 halftime lead. The Dons took advantage of a slight Red Devil stall late in the third quarter and moved out in front 38-37. In the final quarter Spanish Fork's Boyack moved the Forker lead to 3 points with a nice shot but Pete Carter counted one from the foul line and Gary Gabbitas tipped in the missed second sec-ond try to even the count and send the spectators into a bedlam. After Spanish tallied a foul shot, Brent Haymond came through with a beautiful lefty from way out to put the SHS cagers ahead. Swen- another of his jump shots put Pete Carter came through with a lay-in. Duke "speed ball" Reid cleverly tied up a Don passer and then plucked out a pass to dribble in for another basket for the Devils. With this basket the rafters were really ringing and the sudden hush was all too obvious on the Red Devil side as Swenson swished through another of his 13 counters. Thom put the game on ice with a foul pitch and Spanish missed another would-be tieing shot and was battling for possession of the ball as the buzzer ended the thrill- pacKea contest. For Springville, Thorn counted 15. Gabbitas 10 and Haymond 9 to lead the scoring for the Devils. The Swenson brothers hit 11 and 13 with Migliaccio getting 10 for the Dons. In other Nebo games Friday, Payson beat Carbon 44-43 at Price and Juab tipped Eureka 51-41 at Nephi. |
