Urges Conservation Of Resources The rapid industrial development currently going forward in Utah and particularly in Utah Valley, inclines us all to lose sight of the fact that, after all, agriculture is our most basic industry. This was forcibly emphasized by Dr. George D. Clyde, Commissioner of Interstate Inter-state Streams and Director of the Utah Water and Power Board, in a speach before the Welfare Workers Work-ers of the LDS Church, during the recent conference. Since Utah is definitely a "desert state" the importance of the conservation con-servation and intelligent use of our water resources is of utmost importance, im-portance, the speaker declared. Dr. Clyde, a former resident of Springville, outlined a- five-point plan for the wise use of our most vital natural resource. These basic principles were: (1) Source of the Water supply; (2) How much water is needed to mature the crop; (3) Best methods of water application; (4) Water rights possessed pos-sessed by the farmer. Declaring that there is no substitute sub-stitute for water, Dr. Clyde made a plea for farm managers to better adapt their irrigation practices to assure a maximum use of available water. He recommended the lining of canals, and urged record keeping keep-ing to determine the averaare depth of water in reservoirs, soil types, and the amount of water required bv each crop grown. The importance impor-tance of land-leveling was cited by the speaker as a means of preventing pre-venting wasteful runoff and attendant at-tendant soil erosion. . Irrigation, when continued over a period of years, always involves proper drainage in order to prevent pre-vent water-logging, Dr. Clyde emphasized. em-phasized.
