Show There's A Time For All Things! Are Springville boys and girls lazy or have parents spoiled them? Is it easier for parents to hand out spending money in these days of plenty than to make their children earn it? Why do we have to go to small towns such as Delta to get boys and girls to pick fruit, while our own teen-agers go on summer vacations? These are only a few of the questions, Springville and Mapleton fruit growers were asking this week, when it was learned that the Boy Scouts of Kolob district are planning a vacation in Payson Canyon, Can-yon, beginning July 9, when this year's cherry harvest is at it's peak. This age group 13 years and older, it seems are most in demand for cherry picking. Fruit growers point to the fact that it is a very hard job to get sufficient help during cherry picking time although there are nearly twice as many boys and girls in this area fruit picking age, than there were several years ago. One fruit grower stated that during last year's cherry harvest, one girl made more than $200 in three weeks. With food, taxes and clothing at the present high prices, this amount made by one or two children in one family, would help considerably with the family budget. The fruit growers, in making the complaint concerning boys and girls going on vacations, are not entirely against vacations and trips for the young people as one remarked, "all work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy but all play and no work, makes Jack a broke boy." Fruit growers arc not placing the blame entirely on the boys and girls 12, 13, ,and 14 years of age, for their seemingly lack of responsibility re-sponsibility in helping with the family budget. It is easier for them to ask for their so called "allowance" each week and get it from indulgent in-dulgent parents. And when it comes to trips to the canyon during cherry harvest, har-vest, a lot of parents cooperate to see that their boys have a good time when they could be working. The payroll for the fruit harvest in the Springville and Mapleton areas is approximately $20,000 and there is no reason why Springville boys and girls cannot have this amount rather than the foreign laborers who will be brought in here or the Delta Scouts and other young folks who arc planning to come from other towns. There are plenty of young people in Springville and Mapleton to do the work if they would work. It would be to their advantage as well as to the good of their parents and would certainly benefit the fruit growers of this vicinity if vacations were planned for later in the summer when there is little or no work for the youngsters. There will be a job for every boy and girl from 12 years and up who will work during the fruit harvest and the cooperation of parents is being asked in enlisting these young people in the work. Otherwise foreign labor is coming in and boys will be transported here while our voung people bask in the sun or take a camping trip. A FRUIT GROWER |
