Show PaieCammeI Horseback Ride Changed Life H YEAR AFTER Arthur Jensen, Grand Rapids, Michigan, got out of the army, his troubles came to a head. His marriage was a failure and ended in divorce. He was finding it obligatory to back up his father who was paying hospital bills which exceeded ex-ceeded his yearly income. His mother had a nerv- ous breakdown and had to be sent to an institution. institu-tion. Next his father went into bankruptcy and his brother and two sisters had to go to live with relatives. Arthur quit his job and started to drink to excess. His friends, who had understanding of his situation, stood by. They never condemned him for his newly acquired bad habit. After three months, however, they decided to do a little more than stand by and look on. They asked him how long he intended to continue at his present pace? Did he intend ever to try to get back on his feet? Carnegie Arthur replied that it was no use, he just wasn't capable of handling the problems that beset him. Then these friends applied a method that boys frequently use when they find a friend too timid to go into deep water. Meaning, of course, that they throw him in and make him swim or sink. Knowing, that he likely, will swim. They didn't throw Arthur into deep water, but they told him that he was going to start on the road back, AND AT ONCE. Arthur rebelled. But they added that if he didn't cooperate they would knock his block off. He could see that they meant it. His friends talked it over with him with the result that he went to a private club owned by his friends where he went in for horseback horse-back riding. He rode through the woods hours at a time. During these rides through the woods, he began to think. And his thoughts were fine and clear. After six months he decided to go to another town and start all over again in a new field. Today Arthur Jensen doesn't worry; he knows that he is fully capable of any challenge life offers him. |
