Show FIND $20,000 SHORTAGE IN 1931 ACCOUNT New Claim Brings Total Amount Sought By State to $70,000 SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 1 (U.R) Milton II. Welling, Well-ing, secretary of state, today was held to account for a new shortage in his department, an auditor's check-up charging charg-ing that he withheld $20,000 from the state in 1931. State Auditor Julius Andersen today completed the audit of records rec-ords for 1931, and held Welling accountable for that sum in motor mo-tor vehicle and other fees, assert-r-dly collected or collectable by his office, but not turned over to the treasury. Welling was convicted Saturday nf a felony, the state charging that he cashed a false wage claim for $100 in 1S130. The new claim set forth by Andersen An-dersen brings the total sum sought by the state from Welling to $70,120.80. Previous audits of the secretary of state's accounts lor 1032 and 1033 held him accountable ac-countable for $40,467.30. Welling and his bondsmen to dale have remitted to the state $10,938.14. Acting on the basis of the new audit, Andersen said he would make a formal demand of Welling for a complete account of the money said to be due the state. He indicated fie would take action "in a few days." ' |
