Show PAYSON HOLDS FOUNDERS DAY Apostle Mallard Is Speaker At Annual Observance; Contest Featured. PAYSOX--Th.' nineteenth annual Founders day celebration was held at the Pmvsoii high school on Frit-ay with one of the largest crowds in attendance ever to assemble at the school. Apostle Melvin J. "Balkml of Salt Lake City delivered the Founders' day address at the morning pro--ram. Other speakers included Stewart Schaerror, student president; presi-dent; Principal Joh?i Carlisle. Superintendent Su-perintendent Melvin Wilson. Mayor A. L. Curtis and D. C. Grcmihalgh of the school board. The music included selections by t he mixed chorus, girls' chorus. and boys' chorus directed by C. O. Nelson ; violin solo. Theresa Kranss, and a reading by Miss Mao Houser. Oratorical Contest During the noon hour luncheon was served b" the domestic science department to more than five hundred parents and four hundred ; students. A ba nd concert of ten selections was given by the school band under the direction-' of Lawrence Law-rence Clayson. The feature of the a f trnoon ' was the annual oratorical contest for the Tolhurst gold medals. Miss Delsa Greenhalgh won for the girls with the subject, "The Outstanding Characteristics of George Washington.'1 Wash-ington.'1 Milton Beck won for the boys with the subject "Courage To Carry Car-ry On." Other contestants in the finals were Marion Patten, Norma , Burraston, Max Kerr, Golden Men-love Men-love and Carol Draper. A one-act play, "Grandma Pulls the String." was directed, by Miss Anna Hughes, with Mildred Johnson. John-son. Helen Bettst Faye Openshaw, Margret Wright, Ruby Jewett and Boyd Wilson in the cast. A demonstration from the athletic ath-letic department in the gymnasium was the closing feature of the afternoon program. |
