SAN FRANCISCO, July 80 (UP) Work on the building: of the extension of the Western West-ern Pacific railroaci's tracks, to connect with the Great ; Northern line. f. $10,000,000 project, ' will be started at j once and rushed through to j an early completion, it was an- i nounced here today. 8 Mllo Extension The project, which approaches in magnitude the appropriation for the first unit of the Boulder dam ' construction, is declared by engi- j neers to be the most important 1 work involving the construction of ; railway lines to be undertaken in the last 10 years within the bor-! lers of California. I The contract calls for the build- ing of an extension of 88 miles by the Great Northern of their line I I from Klamath Falls, Ore., to Bie-ber. Bie-ber. The Western Pacific's part of the link will extend from Keddie, Ked-die, California, northward 112 miles to Bieber. In granting a permit per-mit for this link, the interstate commerce commission accepted testimony that it would be a benefit bene-fit to Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Ne-vada, Utah, Colorado and California. Califor-nia. The contract for thT construction construc-tion work was ..awarded to W. A. Bechtel of Sun Francisco, and the Utah Construction company of Og-den, Og-den, who offered a joint bid. The successful bidders must clear about 1500 acres of right of way, handle approximately 3,000,000, cubic yards of rock and earth in ' the grading of the roadbeds, and j ballast the main track and 2 miles I of siding with 354,000 cubic yards I of rock. |
