Visiting the art institutions and galleries in Chicago, and associating: associa-ting: with some of the leading artists ar-tists of that city Mr. Knudsen was surprised to note the recogniztion piven to the Springville high school art movement He says the high school is recognized as the outstanding out-standing and in fact the only one in the United States to support to such extent the work of contemporary contem-porary artists. Mr. Knudsen was interviewed by a member of the Chicago Post staff while in that city and the following week a story of the art movement in Springville appeared in the art section of that paper. At Washington. D. C. Mr. Knudsen Knud-sen was the guest of Theodore J. Morgan, who won first prize in the 3930 Springville exhibit. At Philadelphia Phila-delphia he visited Helen Weisin-berg, Weisin-berg, Mary Butler and Elizabeth Washington, all three prominent artists ar-tists who have sent pictures to Springville exhibits. An intresting feature which he ; noted during the trip, Mr. Knudsen states, is the vast amount of money being spent by large cities to hoiue , art. Especially was this true in Philadelphia Phil-adelphia where two million dollars . was recently spent for the art mil- ! seum building and another million , is being spent to carry on an art beautification program. i Local Kxhibitois I It is surprising to note, according to Mr. Knudsen, the number of artists ar-tists in these '.are' and costly museums mu-seums whose work have appeared yearly in the Springville exhibits, and whose pictures are hanging in the permanent collection here. James Knox, winner of second prize in this years exhibit proved an - -especially -entertain ing HoM- r'urrng-Mr. r'urrng-Mr. Knudsen's two day visit in New York. He introduced him to many of the leading artists of the country and acquainted him with the larger art dealers of the city. Through his personal contact with these artists and his visit to the McBeth galleries and others of equal merit, Mr. Knudsen feels that some very fine pictures will be available for the 1031 exhibit. Visits Dallin Cyrus E. Dallin welcomed Mr. Knudsen to his home and studio at' Boston as a friend from his home town. It is especially interesting, Mr. Knudsen states, to note the popularity pop-ularity which Mr. Dallin has achieved in the New England states. He is recognized as the outstanding scuptor of that section. Mr. Knudsen Knud-sen had the pleasure ol' seeing the original "Appeal to the Great Spirit," a piece of woik by Dallin which stands in front of the art museum in Boston, and also the "Massasoitt"' which was placed at Plymouth Rock during the big 1921 celebration there. Mr. Dallin has now completed the cast for the Pioneer Mother monu- nient which will be erected on the , Springville city park in the near future, fu-ture, Mr. Knudsen said. During his visit to Glousier and Rock Port, Mass., Mr. Knudsen met early 50 prominent artists among whom were A. J. Hammond and Lester Stevens, who have exhibited ex-hibited many times in the local exhibit. From New York Mr. Knudsen Knud-sen took a boat to Jacksonville, Fla., and visited many places of historical his-torical interest In and around St. Augustine and Charleston. Visits South-He South-He met Charles Millet, artist of national reputation, and at Jackson, Jack-son, Miss., he met Mrs. Marie A. Hull, who sent pictures to. the Springville exhibit this year for the first time. I The art galleries M Memphis and j Mobile were especially interesting to Mr. Knudsen as was also the ex- j hibit of Lindbergh trophies at the historic building in St. Louis. : Mr. Knudsen states that with all the interesting features of his 12.000-mile trip the one big item which stands out in his mind was the interest which the artists in the "P art ctnters manifest in the r.n-mial r.n-mial art exhibit of the Springville high school. ! |
