Show Must Springville be without a movie? Must the city be without a movie theatre? In answer ans-wer to this question, A. I. Tippetts, chairman of the city planning commission, this week submitted the following article to the Springville Herald: Part of a recent letter to Mayor Paul M. Haymond from the owner of the Rivoli Theatre, O. V. Gilhool of Salt Lake City, states: "We wilf close the Rivoli Theatre August 14, 1963, probably never to re-open again under our direction. In our opinion, Springville would benefit if it could be fixed some way to operate the Rivoli as a civic project on a non-profit basis. We will entertain and study any sensible plan that Springville would care to make." It is the opinion of some that the day of the movie theatre is passed, except in the larger cities; that TV competition is too much to overcome and that Springville, being as close to Provo as it is. could never make a go of it. On the other hand, it is argued that this is entirely a too pessimistic view of the matter. The Scera Theatre in Orem has been a big success for many years and is still going strong, and Orem is closer to Provo than is Springville. Frank Patten, who has been manager at the Rivoli Theatre for some time, asserts that the records will show that the Rivoli was not a losing proposition and that its closing was the result of doctor's orders to Mr. Gilhool to retire due to his health. Furthermore, the main concern should not be to make money, but to show wholesome pictures at a nominal nom-inal cost and keep our young people at home and off the highways as much as possible. As a means of sounding out public sentiment, a qucstionaire has been worked out and printed which townspeople arc asked to fill out and mail or bring to Mayor Paul Haymond at the City Hall or A. I. Tippetts, 45 East 500 North. If sentiment justifies, the Springville Development Council, in cooperation with the city council and other interested parties, will procede to work out a plan to lease or buy and operate the Rivoli as a nonprofit non-profit cooperative community enterprise.
