Show BYU opens with Montana Sat. Brigham Young University's 6-6 split in preseason games may have left a number of questions about the Cougars unanswered. But a more revealing re-vealing test will be forthcoming forthcom-ing this week when the Mountain Moun-tain Cats open Skyline conference confer-ence play against Montana. Coach Stan Watts and the Cougars, who returned last weekend from three games on the road, one of which they won, play the Grizzlies Saturday Satur-day night in the George Albert Smith Fieldhouse. In Montana the Cougars will meet a conference team that fared much better in preseason presea-son games than did BYU or any of the other Skyline schools. The Grizzlies, with an 11-man squad built around seven sev-en returning lettermen, won five and lost only one. It was hoped that the Cougars' Coug-ars' three games on the road might give some indication as to the club's strength. But in the losses to Louisville and Citadel they looked only so-so, while hitting their stride again in dumping Louisiana State. Coach Pete Witbeck's frosh will meet the Snow Badgers in a preliminary game. Tipoff for the preliminary will be 6 p.m. Witbeck has been working with the frosh candidates since last October. Although they have had ample opportunity for intersquad action since the varsity season opened last month, they have yet to play a game against real opposition. The height of this year's team is above average for a freshman club, but they haven't the speed of last year's team. |
