Named in honor of the American troops who gave up their lives in the St. Mihiel battle, the I'nited States army transport trans-port St. Mihiel was launched at Hog Island today. Mrs. Frank T. Hines of Salt Lake, wife of Brigadier General Hines, was the sponsor. The launchine party included General Hines: his daughter. Miss Vera Hines; Ma.ior Frank Van Vleck; Lieutenant F. L. Sibber:: officials of the American International Shipbuilding corporation, and the United States shipping board, emergency flet corporation: Churchill Williams, associate editor of the Saturday Sat-urday Evening Post, and Mrs. Williams; Charles L. Huddington, treasurer of the Curtis Publishing company; Mrs. Lud-ington; Lud-ington; Mr. Ludiugtou 's sister. Miss Catherine Ludington: Walter G. Fuller, secretary of the Curtis Publishing company, com-pany, and Mrs. Fuller: Barton W. Cur rie. editor of the ConBtry Gentleman, and Mrs. Currr; H. A. Davis, managing editor of the ladies Home Journal, and Mrs. Davis. The St. Mihiel took the water without with-out n hitch in less than a minute after the saw off gang started work. Mrs. Hines was an adept sponsor, smashing the bottle of champagne against the vessel's bow with a healthy swing. Following the launching the spectators spectat-ors were taken on an inspection of the shipyard. The St. Mihiel is tbo second troopship troop-ship and the sixty-seventh vessel launched at Hog Island. It is -MS fee: long and fifty-eight feet across the beam, and is an oil burner. The vessel will carry a crew of oighty one and her troop carrying capacity is seventy-seven officers ami 2.133 enlisted men." |
