From twenty-five to twenty-seven seats in the Belgian chamber of deputies have been gained by the Socialists, according to estimates by the neutral newspaper La Soir. which says, "This thrust toward the Left must be taken into consideration. ' ' The middle class party elected no representatives. This is considered significant, sig-nificant, as the latter organization had the support of the aleoholists, or the anti-dry partisans. Complete returns available this noon froift all but about fifty districts confirm the indications that Sunday's elections to the chamber of deputies resulted in a notable triumph tri-umph for the conservative, moderate and nationalist elements. In the 5!S districts for which the returns are in, these elements elected 494 members as compared with fifty-four seats won by - the extremists. In its noon edition the Socialist newspaper, news-paper, Bon Soir, acknowledged the defeat de-feat of its party. "Clerneneeau is victorious, vic-torious, terribly and appallingly victorious," victor-ious," it said. '"The republic, however, how-ever, is not so victorious.'" Francisco Nitti, the premier, and the other candidates can-didates on big list in his province were elected almost unanimously in the election elec-tion of Sunday for seats in the chamber of deputies. Socialist candidates for tho chamber of deputies are leading in Rome, Turin, Milan, Florence, Aneona and Parma, but are in the minority in southern Italy and in the rural districts. |
