Show MAJOR SMITH AND OBSERVER UNHURT IN FORCED LANDING RENO, Nov., Oct. 16. Major Harry Smith and Lieutenant Allen, observer, cdstbound, were forced to land in a field six miles east of Fernley, Nev., this morning morn-ing and their De Haviland machine is a total wreck. The men escaped injury. Fernley is forty miles east of Reno. The plane was brought down in a roiiRh field covered with sagebrush. One wins was broken, the propeller smashed and the landing gear damaged, but it id not tip over. Smith stated over the telephone that he was out of the race, as the plane could not be repaired. Unable to locate the Reno field because of a defective compass, Lieutenant Nelson, Nel-son, in plane No. 6, fl;vv to the north of Reno and landed at Reek with, Cal., at 2:30 this afternoon.
