Show PACKER REPLIES TO ACCUSATIONS MADE BY GOVERNOR COX CHICAGO. Aug. 15. Louis F. Swift, president of Swift Sc Co., in replying to the charges mad a against the Chicago packers, said today: "Swift & Co. has never stored food for speculative purposes, but only to meet the public demand for certain commodities commodi-ties throughout the year. When the federal fed-eral food regulation law was adopted by congress in August, liU7. the Washington authorities interpreted it to mean that certain foods could be stored for a period not exceeding twelve months, even in states where shorter periods were provided pro-vided by atate laws. We have followed the rulings of the food administration officials of-ficials in every respect. We have never at any time shipped food from Cleveland to Chicago, or vice versa, to manipulate prices to d.-eive people or to keep food off the market." |
