Show RAILROAD TRAFFIC. According to a statement issued by Director General Walker D.-Hines, "tho railroads of the country are now doing a heavier business for tha present season sea-son of the year than was ever done in the history of the railroads in normal years, and practically as heavy business busi-ness as was done at this season in 191S, which exceeded all previous records." As a matter of fact tho business of the entire country is in an exceedingly prosperous pros-perous condition, the railroads are being taxed to their full carrying capacity and there is an insistent demand for more freight cars. It is to be hoped there will be no congestion during tho coming winter and that the railroad administration ad-ministration will be able to keep the trains moving in all directions. The return of the roads to their owners is still a pressing question, for there is no such thing as stability under existing conditions. Kail transportation facilities facili-ties cannot be enlarged while there is so much uncertainty as to tho status of the roads. The director general is probably doing the best that can be done under such conditions, but that is not enough to meet the requirements of business. Congress should act without delay in order to avert a dangerous check to the prosperity of the country. |
