Show THREE OAKLETS ARE AFTER NEW BERTHS PAN FRANCISCO. March 2. TMnsr are certainly going to break tough this year for the little "Napoleon" of the Pacific Pa-cific Coast league, J. Cal Ewing, if said gent doesn't get real busy and start something. First off Cal's manager, Del Howard, takes a few weeks' leave of absence and makes the transbay fans very wrathful, so peeved, in fact, that they rose up and demanded the dismissal of Del H. as Oak boss. But that couldn't be done because Del is a stockholder in the club. Then Howard returns from his ranch at Paso Robles, throws oil on the troubled waters of Oakland basebalidom, restores himself to good faith with the fans apd fanettes. But only for a short time, however, how-ever, for almost as soon as the fans commence com-mence praising him as a baseball manager, man-ager, Howard grabs the rattler for his ranch again. He has returned for the second time and announces that he is now ready to take up the duties of a manager in a businesslike manner it being only a week before the opening of the spring training season. Of course, that was only one of Ew-ing's Ew-ing's big troubles. Now comes more worry. Bill Prough, first string pitcher Roxey Middleton and Bill Lane all want to break away from the Oakland club. Accordingly they have asked that a trade be made with some one of the P. C. L. clubs, preferably Salt Lake,, in which they will be the principals. Prough and Howard can't agree; Middleton Mid-dleton maintains that he has been with the Kastbay club too long for comfort's sake, while Lane fjgures that a change of pasture will be healthfully beneficial. True enough, Cal is planning a trade for these three players, but deep down in his heart he is more desirous that they remain with the Oaks at least another year. He renllzes the value of Prough as ; a pitcher and Middleton and Lane as 1 outfielders, and, unless he can get men equally as capable It isn't probable that he will make a change. Stanley Dougan, pitcher for the Bees, has returned his contract unsigned. Dougan, Dou-gan, according to a statement credited to him, is through with professional baseball. base-ball. Stanley has accepted a job as athletic ath-letic director for the St. Mary's college. |
