Show OPPORTUNITY AT HAND. "The sped arrow, the spoken word and tlio lost opportunity come not back," says nn old Persian proverb. At this tlmo, when representatives of tho great powers of the earth arc gathered gath-ered at Paris, an opportunity to bring lasting peace to tho world is presented. Another such opportunity may never occur, certainly not until after tho conclusion con-clusion of another great war in which millions of liuinaii beings are slaughtered, slaugh-tered, millions more maimod and all the nations financially ruined. Some of tho belligerents engaging iu the recent struggle in Europe aro ruined financially even now, and! our own country, rich as it is, cannot afford another such war, allowing that tbo people aro perfectly willing that their sons be offered up as a useless sacrifice iu a struggle clearly proven table We bclievo a great majority ma-jority of the people of the United States favor some sort of a league of nations and we believe that peoplo of all other countries entertain similar views regarding re-garding tho necessity for action at the present time. It is not to bo expected that a perfect covenant can bo drawn at Versailles, for perfection cannot bo reached this side of eternity. But. a start in the right direction can bo matlo and tho work of tho conference can bo improved upon as time rolls along. There is some opposition oppo-sition to tho present covenant in this country and a few public men are opposed op-posed to any kind of a leagtio plan But thoso mou aro not tho ones who would bo called upon to face death in case of another war and it is not to be supposed that they pay any more than their share of the taies. Here in Utah tho people are almost unanimously of tho opinion that now is the time to bind, all nations together in a leaguo and carry out the diviue injunction as far as possible. Public sentiment in this respect is the samo all over the country and there is not the least doubt but that tho wishes of the great majority ma-jority will govern in tho end. At any rate tho United States senate will be called upon to ratify or reject a leaguo plan adopted at Versailles in connection with tho treaty of peace. |
