Six sailors of the Great Lakes naval training station are In custody and the body of another a sui-I sui-I cide is in a morgue, as a result of alleged al-leged grafting in connection with the I discharge of men from the station, it was learned tonight. Lieutenant Commander S. C. Roberts, executive officer at the station, said no evidence had been found to support a charge that discharges actually had been sold, but that a number num-ber of enlisted men and a few petty officers offi-cers had apparently practiced a fraud on some of their mates by professing to have influence In obtaining releases. The existence of the investigation be- came known today following the suicide yesterday of Samuel Moscowitz of De- troit, a second-class seaman, who ' plunged .from an eighth story window of the local naval intelligence office after making a confession, according to Lieutenant Lieu-tenant Edwin L. Reed, chief - of the of-, of-, flee. ; Moscowitz first was put under surveil- lance when it was discovered that sev-I sev-I eral men had been forging furlough-fare I certificates, according to Lieutenant Reed. The lieutenant refused to deny or affirm that he had learned of at-I at-I tempts to "sell" discharges or of bribery in return for assurances that the "payer" I would not be sent to sea. Lieutenant Commander Roberts said until Moscowitz's arrest the only phase of grafting to have aroused Inquiry at the station was that relating to the "discharge "dis-charge brokers." The arrest of Moscowitz was followed by the sudden death of his father, who is said to have expired at his Detroit home as a result of the shock caused by his son's being taken into custody.
