The fate of Poland as a stable, independent, anri-i anri-i Bolshevik natioi? depends absolutely on the inclusion of Danzig and its hinterland within the new Polish state, in the opln- 1 ion of John F. Smulski, Polish commissioner commis-sioner for the United States. 'T am speaking." said Mr. Smulski in ' a statement issued here tonight; "apropos of the disquieting reports which have reached this country, that, although the commission of oxperts has declared for full Polish control in Danzig, the great council has refused to accept this finding. "Without territorial possession of Danzig Dan-zig the Polish state will become a mere advanced trading post for Gf-rmauy. It will be obliged to do its business through German merchants, through German ports and German banks, and to make the best trades possible for its economic existence, which will mean the acceptance of terms subordinate to German commercial ng-graiHiizcinent.- "The great UodH textile industries which the Germans have sought lo destroy de-stroy by tiie dismantling of tiie plants can only exist with a free sfa enirane for the cotton required. The loss ot Danzig will inn ke this Impossible. I am loath to give credent- to tho Intimations which I have found in t he ca tiled news stories and which I cannot ignore, that the sudden distress over the possible denationalizing de-nationalizing of the Germans within Polish territory Is based on a fear that the Poles may build a rival cotton textile Industry in their new land. "Hindenburg was quoted the other day as having said t b:i t Poland would either belong to' the Germans or the l.iolsheviki. Any plan whh'h aims at th is time to giving to the Pnlp.s mere t ran sit facilities facili-ties through Danzig, and whieh makes oven the operation of a railroad botwoen Danzig and Warsaw subject to German approval, makes for t lie control of Poland by the Bolshevists." |
