Show HEME LEGISLATION j TO PRESIDENT Executive Will Decide Upon Undertaking at Present Session. WASHINGTON, May 22. Whether revenue legislation shall be undertaken at this session of congress depends on President Wilson's decision after a conference con-ference Tomorrow with congressional leaders who are strongly in favor of postponing post-poning the legislation until next December. Decem-ber. Today the president went over the arguments ar-guments presented by Secretary McAdoo for enactment of a new tax law before adjournment. AH the advice Secretary McAdoo got today from his advisers having charge of administering the revenue law and of planning to meet future financial needs of the government, was to the effect that a new measure must be enacted by next fall. He was told that by Daoemher or January Jan-uary the government will need more revenue from taxation, or definite assurance as-surance that it will be forthcoming, and that It will be next to impossible to collect col-lect taxes under a law which might not be completed before next February or March. Regardless of government needs, Secretary Sec-retary McAdoo is represented as believing believ-ing that business interests of the nation should know long before next February or March the nature and amount of taxes to be assessed on them for this year's business. Members of the senate and house, however, how-ever, still are hostile to the proposal to keep congress in session throughout the-summer the-summer and to the enactment of tax legislation leg-islation on the eve of elections. Leaders were unanimous, however, in stating that If Secretary McAdoo and the president agree that legislation is absolutely necessary, neces-sary, they will get to work immediately on a bill and seek to press it through. Chairman KItchin of the house wavs and means committee said today that if it is finally decided to take up the revenue rev-enue question at this session, public hearings hear-ings would be held and it probably would take the house two months to dispose of the bill. |
