Show A; S. & R. MAKES PROGRESS IN MEXICO All Points But One Are Now in Operation; Conditions Encouraging. En-couraging. With every available unit of its smelting smelt-ing facilities in operation in this coun-trv, coun-trv, the American Smelting & Refining company lias made good progress in opening up its Mexican plants. Today all but one of them have resumed. What looked like an insurmountable barrier in the proposal of the Mexican government to double to 50 per cent the amount of gold to be shipped back to that counlrv from silver bullion emanating emanat-ing from that source has been eliminated by reason of a complete change of front on the part of the Mexican officials, who will let the original agreement stand; this calls for 25 per cent of the silver bullion value to be shipped back in gold. The new sulphuric acid plant, built jointly by the American Smelting & Refining Re-fining company and the Utah Copper company at a cost approximating $1,000,-000, $1,000,-000, has been put in operation with a yield of 150 tons daily. Capacity can be increased as desired should demand from outside sources warrant such a step. Taken as individual properties, and wit h no large corporate affiliation, it is asserted that none of the smelters of the Guggenheim group could show a profit at the present time. Costs of material ma-terial and labor have advanced tremendously, tremen-dously, while mining companies with long-time contracts have not, generally at least, raised their payments for the smelting of their products.
