W. ; is being ivestigated. j In the meantime, the manner in which I he came Into possession of the powder j license was cleared up by County Clerk Thomas Homer, government license agent ! for explosives in Salt Lake county. 1 Shields was a shift boss at the works of the Cardiff Mining & Milling company at the time he obtained the license. He and James Doran, day foreman at the mine, applied at the office of the county clerk for foremen's licenses and were told they must first bring someone to I vouch for them. Beach D. Lyon, pur-i pur-i chasing agent for the compariy, finally i appeared with the two men at the clerk's ! office and attested that they were regu- larly employed as foremen by the Cardiff j company and licenses were given them. Shields never went back to the mine. ! Mr. Lyon said last night that so far aa he has been able to learn the man went on a spree. "I saw him once on the street," said Mr. Lyon, "but not to speak to him. Ot course. If he had gone back to work his license would have been filed in the company's com-pany's office at the mine. He retained it through his failure to return to work." Mr. Lyon said that he did not attach any importance to the man's carrying away the license, since he thought it of no use to him except In the capacity of a foreman, giving him authority to handle powder. He expressed surprise upon being informed that the foreman's license permits the holder to buy explosives, ex-plosives, holding to the opinion thai only with such license as he obtained as the company's purchasing; agent could the license li-cense holder make purchase of explosives. County Clerk Thomas Homer called attention at-tention to the fact that protection of the government is absolutely In the hands of the mining companies after licenses have been issued to their foremen for whom company officials have vouched. |
