(Correspondence (Cor-respondence of the Associated Press.. The exploitation of American soldiers by French hotel keepers and merchants to which attention was first called by the French press, has just culminated here in a vigorous measure which so far as this imnonant disembarkation point is con-cearned con-cearned at least, ha3 made a great impression. im-pression. The landlord of one of the principal hotels, finding his rooms all taken by American officers, appea red to consider thut the law of supply and demand justified jus-tified in his case a considerable increase in profits. The price of rooms doubled; meals and drinks went up in proportion. Rear Admiral Wilson's attention having been drawn to the situation he waited on the mayor, who regretted the fact, but found himself unable to interfere with the freedom of commerce. Admiral Wilson ordered the officers living there to move, placed sentries in front of .the building with orders to keep every American soldier sol-dier away from the hostelry. The argument argu-ment was decisive. The landlord begged that the interdiction be removed, but thus far Admiral Wilson is obdurate and the hotel is almost empty. |
