LATTER WARMLY DEFENDS HIMSELF Declares Whole Trouble Is Due to Efforts of George W. Perkins to Dominate the Committee. ST. LOUIS, Fob. ll.I.ate tonight efforts ef-forts to harmonize members of the Republican Repub-lican national committee ' on a choice for chairman to be elected tomorrow, apparently ap-parently had failed. Earlier in the evening, after a day devoted de-voted to the conferences and incessant electioneering, it had been reported that John T. Adams of Iowa, the present vice chairman, would withdraw and that probably his only rival for the chairmanship, chairman-ship, Will H. Hays of Indirna, would uo the same. Subsequently an announcement was made, sponsored by Governor Goodrich of Indiana, John T. Hert of Kentucky, field marshal of the Hays forces, and others, that Mr, Hays's name would positively go before the meeting tomorrow and that t.wemy-eight votes out of a possible fif- y ty-three had been pledged to him. Attacked by Calder. Adams's Americanism, it was learned, had been subject to an attack by United States Senator Calder of New York In the meeting of the executive committee. Scarcely had this story gained circulation circu-lation when a bulletin came from Mr. Adams's room that he would go before the committee in a fight to a finish for the office. The bulletin was followed by a formal siatenient. asserting that the whole trouble was due to the efforts of George W. Perkins to dominate tne committee. com-mittee. It was said also that Hays did not have the votes claimed. Adams's Statement. Concerning the attack on his patriotism, Mr. Adams's statement said: "As the descendant of nine generations of New lngland stock and without a drop of German blood in my veins. I have not and could not have the slightest slight-est sympathy for any nation as against the United States or any nation with 'ie interests and welfare of the United States are allied. "I have served ay a member of the council of national defense in my state and have done everything in my power to aid in the fight to defend and maintain the rights and honor of my own country." |
