Show ; Governor Proclaims Week of j: Enrollment for Utah Boys as i; Working Reserve at Home Governor Bamberger yesterday issued the following j: proclamation : WITH the advent of spring ami the necessity of calling many thou- !; KandH of our young men to the colors, the state and cation are con- ; fronted with the very pressing problem of securing the farm labor abso- i ' lately necessary if we are to iiiercabC our jjrociuetion of food to an j a mount adequate to supply the needs of our armiea and those of our - ; allies, as well as of our people at home. :' Tin; urgency of increasing our army in the field as rapidly as pos- !; I sihle forces us to tho conclusion that our farm labor, particularly our : !; unskilled farm labor, must be for the most part performed by persons ', : I not of military age, or rather by persons Dot within the limits pre- scribed by the selective service law for men of our great national army. ! Uy far the greater portion of this labor must be sougDt in the ranks ', of young men who have not yet attained their majority. Within the ! ; United States there are millions of young men between tho ages of lb' ; and L'l who aro particularly available for the service of food production. ', 1 It is to these young men that the state and nation now propose to ! i appeal. j! Jn order to present to these young men the opportunity to enroll ; for war service, the government of the United Stat es, through the ! department of labor, has organized tho Uu ited States boys ' worki ng reserve, composed in its entirety of boys between tho ages of 16 and -1. , The boys of this reserve will be thoroughly organized to comprise a J1 ' labor supply available to meet any shortage on farms occasioned by tho calling of young men to the colors. ' v At the suggestion of the department cf labor, T, Simon Bamberger, ; governor of Utah, do hereby proclaim and set apart the week beginning ' ' ;, Slay 18, 1018, as J; j Enrollment Week for the United States Boys' Working Reserve i;1 AMD I hereby declare it to be the patriotic duty of every boy between ! the designated ages to register for this most important service. ! This enrollment will be conducted by the state council of defense, ! in co-operation with the United States department of labor and with ; the schools and churches of the state. ' j Service on the farms in this critical period of our country's history ! is a war service of vital importance, and every boy whose labor in ! agriculture increases the food production of the state is a soldier of the republic and will sharo the glory of the ultimate victory with the ' boy wno fights for liberty in the Lorraine trenches. To make enrollment week tho success that it should be, I wish to ' ; call upon the loyal parents of young men within the designated ages to urge their sons to enroll for this service; I wish to urge the school superintendents ana school teachers of the state to make it their special ; duty to transmit this appeal to boys in their classes who are within the . ' enrollment ages; I wisn to invite the co-operation of the churches in. ; spreading this message among the members of tho various congrcga- tions; I wish to ask the assistance of the newspapers of the state in J; ' making a continued and aggressive campaign for a 100 per cent en- ! rollment during the week specified. |
