Show TRIES HIGH FINANCE, BUT LANDS IN JAIL Tom Surle Goes From Utah to Nevada to Flirt With the State Prison. Special to The Tribune ELY, Nev., March 14. Tom Surle is confined in the county jail here and two felony charges have been placed against him, on the charge of issuing worthless checks. Surle is said to have been in similar trouble in Utah and is the same man who was charged with attempting to dispose of a barrel of water in Salt Lake City a short time ago, claiming that the barrel contained good whisky. On arriving in Ely a few days ago, Surle alleged that he had recently received $15,-000 $15,-000 for the loss of a limb while working for a mining company in Montana. He applied to one of the local banks and stated that he wanted to transfer his large account to this district, adding that he intended to engage in business here. He then deposited a -check drawn by himself him-self on a bank in Salt Lake City. Immediately thereafter he visited the Ely garages and automobile agents and arranged for the purchase of five oars, giving his checks in payment, amounting to about $7000. He demanded a receipt for his checks, and, on the strength of such receipts, he succeeded in cashing checks in local saloons amounting to about $75. When these checks were presented pre-sented at the local bank payment was refused re-fused until the check deposited by Surle had been paid. |
