Show POTATO CROP TO BE WAR WINNER Will Prove Vitil Factor in America's Favor, Secretary Carl Vrooman Declares. By International News Service. "WASHINGTON", Sept. 1G. America's potato crop will he a vital factor in winning win-ning the war, according to Assistant Secretary Sec-retary of Agriculture Carl Vrooman. The country will havo at least 100,000,000 bushels of potatoes in excess of the average av-erage and 200,000,000 bushels more than last year, gays Mr. Vrooman. In order to properly conserve this supply, sup-ply, tn release other foods for military use, Mr. Vrooman declares potato warehouses ware-houses must be made available in every' county in the United States. The crop, when harvested, will, it Is said, amount to 462,000.000 bushels. Mr. Vrooman says of the proper distribution of the great crop: "It cannot be made unless the warehouses ware-houses are available and unless the farmers farm-ers who have grown the potatoes are enabled en-abled to make use of the warehouses. Unless Un-less those things are done the nation will have thrown a victory away, will have committed a military blunder just as in- excusable as it would be to shell the , enemy out of a position of tremendous i strategic importance and then fail to occupy oc-cupy the ground gained. To do such a thing would constitute a blunder as irreparable irre-parable as that the British committed at Gallipoli when they could have swept on to Constantinople and did not." Community warehouses are Mr. Vroo-man's Vroo-man's suggestions for meeting the situation situa-tion and he urges farmers' assncla tlons, , bankets and merchants to co-operate to r make the storage places available. |
